Braunschweig Hospital Introduces Groundbreaking Aortic Valve Treatment
A new treatment for severe aortic regurgitation is now available at Braunschweig Municipal Hospital. The procedure uses the JenaValve Trilogy, a catheter-based system designed for patients with limited options. Three individuals have already undergone the minimally invasive surgery this week.
The JenaValve Trilogy addresses a long-standing gap in care for high-risk patients. Until recently, many with aortic insufficiency lacked reliable catheter-based treatments due to insufficient valve calcification. This device solves the problem with a unique clip-and-anchor mechanism, ensuring stable positioning of the heart valve prosthesis.
Only a handful of German cardiac centres currently offer this therapy. As of March 6, 2026, the Herzzentrum der Zentralklinik in Bad Berka and the Herzzentrum at Städtisches Klinikum Braunschweig have integrated it into routine treatment. Nationwide, ten clinics now provide the procedure.
Senior Physician Dr. Ingo Breitenbach described the method as a gentler alternative for patients who previously had few choices. Chief Physician Professor Dr. Tibor Kempf called it a strategic expansion of treatment options, filling a critical need for those at high risk.
The JenaValve Trilogy is now part of standard care at selected German hospitals. Its introduction gives patients with severe aortic regurgitation access to a minimally invasive solution. The procedure is expected to improve outcomes for those who previously faced limited therapeutic choices.
