New AI tool uncovers hidden links between insulin resistance and cancer risk

A new AI tool could change how doctors assess insulin resistance and its link to cancer risk. Developed by researchers at the University of Tokyo Hospital, the AI-IR model uses routine health data to provide more accurate results than traditional methods like BMI. Lead author Yuta Hiraike highlights its potential for large-scale screening.

Insulin resistance is difficult to measure directly. Current methods require specialised equipment, making them impractical for widespread use. The AI-IR model solves this by analysing nine common clinical parameters from standard check-ups.

The tool outperforms BMI in identifying at-risk individuals. While BMI can give misleading results, AI-IR offers a more precise assessment. Researchers also found that insulin resistance may influence cancer risk, not just diabetes and heart disease.

AI-IR provides the first large-scale evidence linking insulin resistance to cancer. The team is now studying how genetic differences affect this risk. Despite its promise, no hospitals have yet adopted the AI-IR model for routine screening as of February 2026.

The AI-IR model could improve early detection of insulin resistance and related health risks. Its reliance on standard health data makes it easy to implement in screening programmes. Further research will clarify its role in personalised cancer prevention.
