150 Hidden Cameras - Alex Gebauer's New Documentary Reveals Eastern Germany's Hidden Wildlife Battles

Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gebauer has returned to his homeland to capture the hidden lives of eastern Germany's wildlife. His new documentary, Earth's Wonders: The Secret World of Animals, showcases dramatic scenes from forests, reed beds, and thickets. The film will air on ARD at 8:15 PM on Monday, March 9.

Gebauer spent months filming across six German states: Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, and Thuringia. To avoid disturbing the animals, he placed 150 hidden cameras in remote locations. The result is rare footage of wolves hunting a stag in the forest, only to have their prey snatched away by a wild boar sounder.

The documentary also follows otters as they build lodges in dense reeds to protect their young from winter cold. During autumn, the film captures the intense battles of red deer stags, their bellows echoing through the reeds as they compete for mates. These scenes highlight the raw and often unseen struggles of wildlife in eastern Germany.

Critics already predict another award for Gebauer's work. His previous films have earned recognition at wildlife festivals, and this latest project continues his tradition of breathtaking nature storytelling.

The documentary will be broadcast on ARD next Monday at 8:15 PM. Viewers can expect close-up encounters with wolves, otters, and red deer in their natural habitats. The film's release follows months of meticulous filming and editing to reveal the secret lives of these animals.
