Davao Region battles child malnutrition after devastating earthquakes

NNC-Davao is closely tracking the nutritional health of vulnerable groups in earthquake-affected areas. These include infants, young children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. The region faces significant challenges, with Davao Occidental reporting the highest rates of stunting and underweight children in Davao Region. The Philippines enforces Executive Order No. 51, also known as the Milk Code. This law bans the distribution of breast milk substitutes during disasters, even when clean water or sterilisation equipment is scarce.

Improper preparation of powdered milk or formula in emergency settings can lead to serious health risks for infants. These include diarrhoea, infections, and life-threatening illnesses. Formula feeding is discouraged, though exceptions exist for infants unable to breastfeed, provided they are supervised by trained health workers.

NNC-Davao is working with local government units, health offices, and humanitarian groups. Their goal is to integrate nutrition-sensitive interventions into earthquake response efforts. Donors have been asked to coordinate with authorities before sending nutrition-related aid to ensure compliance with health guidelines. The Milk Code and emergency nutrition protocols aim to protect breastfeeding and safeguard vulnerable children. Compliance with these rules is critical for the health and survival of the region’s youngest survivors. Authorities continue to stress the importance of proper coordination for all relief efforts.
