AREDS2 Supplements Show Promise in Slowing Advanced Macular Degeneration
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) first demonstrated that high doses of antioxidants and zinc could lower the risk of advanced macular degeneration. A follow-up study, AREDS2, has since refined these findings with an updated supplement formula. This offers new hope for people with intermediate or advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AREDS2 supplements are designed for those with intermediate or advanced AMD. They contain a specific blend of vitamins and minerals: 500mg of vitamin C, 400IU of vitamin E, 2mg of copper, 10mg of lutein, 2mg of zeaxanthin, and 80mg of zinc. Research shows this combination can reduce the risk of progression from intermediate to advanced AMD by about 25%.
The study also confirmed that lutein and zeaxanthin play a significant role in slowing AMD progression. Compared to the original AREDS formula, AREDS2 lowers the risk of late-stage AMD by 18%. It may also help preserve vision longer and reduce the chance of severe central vision loss.
However, the supplements can have side effects. High zinc levels may cause copper deficiency, while high vitamin E doses could increase bleeding risk. Some users may also experience mild digestive issues like stomach cramps or nausea. AREDS2 provides a scientifically backed option to slow AMD progression and protect vision. The formula is available for those at risk of advanced macular degeneration. Its benefits come with some risks, which users should discuss with their doctor.
