Cricket fundraiser battles MND after player's devastating diagnosis

Motor neurone disease (MND) affects thousands across the UK, with six new diagnoses every day. The condition damages the nerves connecting the brain to the muscles, leading to rapid loss of movement and function. Over 5,000 people currently live with MND in the country, with many facing a short prognosis after diagnosis. Nick Varley, 58, received his MND diagnosis in November 2024. The disease quickly impacted his hands and legs, forcing him to stop playing cricket for his local team. He now focuses on fundraising for the MND Association by organising cricket events this summer.

MND progresses fast, with a third of patients dying within a year of diagnosis. More than half do not survive beyond two years. The condition is more common in men, and the risk grows with age. Symptoms can appear within months, affecting speech, mobility, and even breathing.

The MND Association is urging people to support its summer fundraising campaign. Events include charity cricket matches and raffles, with Varley actively recruiting amateur players to join the effort. The campaign aims to raise vital funds for research and support services. Early involvement from the community could help improve outcomes for those living with MND. Varley’s efforts highlight the urgency of addressing the disease’s impact.
