Why Your Skin Turns Yellow or Orange—and When to Worry
Carotenemia is a harmless condition that turns thick skin yellow or orange. It most often appears on the palms and soles but can affect other areas too. The discoloration is temporary and poses no health risks. The condition occurs when too much beta-carotene builds up in the bloodstream. Eating 20 to 50 milligrams of this nutrient daily for several weeks can trigger it. Beta-carotene is abundant in carrots, mangoes, pumpkin, squash and sweet potatoes.
Certain health issues can influence beta-carotene levels in the body. Hypothyroidism, diabetes and kidney disease may contribute to its development. People with fair skin are more likely to notice the discoloration. No treatment is needed for carotenemia. Cutting back on beta-carotene-rich foods can help reverse the effect. The skin typically returns to its normal colour within weeks or months after dietary adjustments.
