Spring has arrived, bringing rain and life to the land. The recent downpour helped newly planted corn, while streams remain low after a dry winter. Birds and plants are stirring as the sun climbs higher each morning. The World Health Organization adopted the Indigenous Determinants of Health in 2023. This framework recognises health as a human right and aligns with Indigenous cosmovisions. These traditions emphasise interconnectivity and relationality between people, nature, and wellbeing.
Indigenous communities are now revitalising their traditional health and wellness practices. At the same time, the Global Plan of Action for the Health of Indigenous Peoples (2027-2040) is open for review. The plan aims to address health challenges shaped by climate change, which is altering local conditions worldwide. The new WHO framework and the upcoming global plan mark steps toward supporting Indigenous health. Traditional knowledge and modern policies are coming together to improve wellbeing. These efforts respond to both cultural values and changing environmental realities.
