Why Gen Z Students Are Embracing Plant-Based Meat Alternatives
A recent study at Iowa State University explored student attitudes towards plant-based meat alternatives. The research involved 1,400 participants aged 18 to 30 and was published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. The survey found that 55% of the students had tried a plant-based meat alternative at least once. Their reasons included enjoyment of new foods, curiosity, and environmental concerns. Encouragement from family and friends also played a role in their decision to try these products.
The study revealed patterns among those who consumed plant-based options. They were more likely to be out-of-state students, vegetarians, and individuals with greater environmental awareness. In contrast, students who had not tried these alternatives tended to view meatless meals less favourably. The findings highlight a clear divide in student perspectives on plant-based foods. Those who tried them often cited personal, social, or environmental motivations. The results suggest a growing interest in meat alternatives among certain groups within the university population.
