North Rhine-Westphalia schools can now dismiss pupils early in extreme heat

Schools in North Rhine-Westphalia may now dismiss pupils early when classroom temperatures rise above 27°C. The decision rests with school leaders, who must also consider each school’s organisational framework. Early dismissal will not apply to upper secondary students in grades 11 to 13 unless health risks arise. The Ministry of Education has issued guidelines to help schools manage extreme heat. Classrooms below 25°C will not qualify for early dismissal, but once temperatures exceed 27°C, school administrations can decide to send pupils home. Primary school pupils and those in grades 5 and 6 require parental coordination before any early release.

Schools must also ensure safe supervision or transportation for younger students if they are dismissed early. Additionally, the ministry advises against scheduling tests or exams on extremely hot days to reduce strain on pupils.

For upper secondary students, early dismissal is not standard practice. However, individual students in grades 11 to 13 may be excused if high temperatures pose a health risk to them. The new guidelines give school leaders flexibility to act based on classroom conditions. They must balance safety with practical concerns, such as supervision for younger pupils. The rules aim to protect students while maintaining educational routines where possible.
