Three Anne Arundel County beaches closed due to unsafe bacteria levels

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has issued health advisories for three local beaches. Bayside Beach, Upper Magothy Beach, and Carrollton Manor are all affected. Routine water testing revealed unsafe bacteria levels in the water. The latest test results came back on Wednesday. They showed elevated levels of enterococci bacteria, exceeding safe limits for recreational activities. As a result, a health advisory for Carrollton Manor was issued the following day.

The department warns against swimming, water skiing, or any water contact at these beaches. People with open cuts or wounds should especially avoid natural bodies of water to prevent vibrio infection. If contact occurs, immediate washing with hot water and soap is strongly advised.

Ingesting the bacteria can lead to gastrointestinal problems like diarrhoea or vomiting. Health officials also recommend waiting at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall before swimming. Fishing and crabbing can still take place, but precautions such as wearing gloves and thoroughly cooking seafood are necessary. The advisories remain in effect until bacteria levels drop to safe standards. Swimming and other water contact activities will be unsafe until conditions improve. The department will continue monitoring and updating the public as needed.
