June 2023 Shatters Heat Records in Bremen and Lower Saxony

June 2023 brought unusually warm and wet weather to Bremen and Lower Saxony. Both regions saw temperatures well above the long-term average, alongside higher-than-normal rainfall and extended sunlight. The month’s average temperature in Bremen and Lower Saxony reached 18.7°C. This was over three degrees higher than the usual figure for June. Bremen’s peak hit 37.3°C, surpassing its previous June record. Lower Saxony also experienced extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 40°C for the first time in its recorded history on 28 June.

Rainfall totals were above average in both areas. Bremen received about 83 litres per square metre, roughly 14% more than normal. Lower Saxony saw around 82 litres per square metre, a 7% increase. Most of this rain fell in the first two weeks of the month.

Sunshine was also abundant. Bremen enjoyed approximately 235 hours of sunlight, while Lower Saxony had around 239 hours. The month stood out for its heat, with Lower Saxony setting a new temperature milestone. Both regions also recorded more rain and sunshine than usual. These conditions marked June 2023 as an exceptional period for the area.
