Uttar Pradesh rolls out heat safety rules to shield schoolchildren
The Uttar Pradesh Government has introduced new guidelines to protect schoolchildren from heat-related illnesses. The Basic Education Department released the 'Teachers' Guideline-2026 for Sensitising Students Towards Heat-related Illnesses' ahead of the new academic session. These measures aim to create a safer, climate-resilient environment in schools across the state. Under the new guidelines, every school must develop a School Heat Action Plan. A designated Health Nodal Teacher will oversee heat wave-related activities, including first aid and emergency responses. Schools are also required to keep detailed records of heat-related incidents, conduct regular reviews, and organise mock drills to ensure preparedness.
Teachers will educate students on recognising early symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Lessons will be integrated into morning assemblies, classroom sessions, and daily routines. Students will be encouraged to report any signs of illness in their peers immediately.
To prevent dehydration, clean drinking water will be available at all times. Students will be reminded to drink water every 20 to 30 minutes. If a student shows symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, they must be moved to a shaded area, and first aid must be provided without delay.
School timings will follow government directives, with outdoor activities scheduled before 10 a.m. during heat waves. The guidelines also equip teachers with the skills and knowledge to handle heat-related emergencies effectively. The initiative ensures schools are better prepared to safeguard students during extreme heat. Teachers and students will receive practical training to respond to heat-related risks. The government’s plan seeks to minimise health hazards while maintaining a safe learning environment.
