Karaganda probe reveals 22M tenge in illegal medical overcharges

An investigation in Karaganda has uncovered widespread overcharging for medical care. Women were incorrectly billed for abortion procedures that should have been fully covered by the OSMS insurance system. The findings reveal a significant misuse of public healthcare funds over several years. The probe identified 775 instances of overcharging between 2021 and 2024, totalling 22 million tenge. Among these, over 700 cases involved patients paying twice for the same service. The prosecutor’s office in Karaganda’s Malikhan Bekeykhan District intervened after discovering the issue.

So far, 218 women have received refunds amounting to 7 million tenge. Authorities continue to process additional claims for reimbursement across the region. The investigation has already led to partial restitution for affected patients. Refunds for other overcharged services remain underway. Officials have confirmed the total sum of improper charges reached 22 million tenge.
