Russia faces alarming surge in viral hepatitis across 35 regions

Viral hepatitis rates have risen sharply in parts of Russia. A new report shows 35 regions now exceed the national average for infections. These include Omsk Oblast, Kamchatka Krai, the Republic of Crimea, and St. Petersburg. Omsk Oblast has one of the highest rates in the country. In 2025, it recorded 1,819 cases of hepatitis C, with a rate of 100.39 per 100,000 people. The same region also saw 2,143 cases of chronic viral hepatitis, reaching 118.27 per 100,000.

The national average between 2022 and 2024 was 44.22 cases per 100,000. Omsk Oblast’s rate is more than double this figure. Other regions, such as Kamchatka Krai, Crimea, and St. Petersburg, are also above the national level. The data highlights a growing health concern in these areas. Omsk Oblast’s infection rates stand out as particularly severe. Public health officials are expected to monitor the situation closely.
