High Omega-3 Levels May Add Five Years to Your Life

A new study shows that high omega-3 levels in the blood can add nearly five years to life expectancy. This effect is comparable to the harm caused by regular smoking, which shortens life by a similar amount. The findings highlight the importance of diet in longevity. Researchers tracked 2,240 people over 65 for an average of eleven years. They found that omega-3 levels, often boosted by eating oily fish, predict mortality as accurately as smoking status. The American Heart Association already advises eating oily fish twice a week for its health benefits.

The study also identified two saturated fatty acids, usually linked to heart risks, that indicate longer life. Four types of fatty acids in total proved strong predictors of mortality, beyond traditional factors. Personalised dietary advice based on blood fatty acid levels may soon be possible.

Small dietary adjustments could have a major impact on health. Further research will test these indicators in European populations to confirm their global relevance. High omega-3 levels can extend life by almost five years, matching the loss from smoking. The study confirms that blood fatty acids are reliable markers of longevity. These findings support tailored dietary recommendations for better health outcomes.
