Border bishops unite in prayer for humane migration reforms along US-Mexico divide

Five Catholic bishops from the US-Mexico border region led a day of pastoral accompaniment in Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Mexico, on 26 June. The events were co-organised by the Kino Border Initiative, Hope Border Institute, and the Center for Migration Studies. The bishops aimed to highlight the need for humane and dignified migration solutions. Bishop James A. Misko of the Diocese of Tucson led the group. He was joined by Bishop John P. Dolan of Phoenix, Archbishop John C. Wester of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Bishop Mark J. Seitz of El Paso, Texas, and retired Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of Tucson.

The day began with Mass at the historic Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Nogales, Arizona, close to the international border. Afterward, the bishops led a rosary and procession across the border into Nogales, Mexico. There, they spent time in adoration of the Eucharist at Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción.

Before returning to the US, the bishops met and dined with migrant advocates at a local migrant advocacy complex. Bishop Kicanas called on the US to ensure detainees in detention centres have ample opportunity to practice their faith. Bishop Misko encouraged the faithful to embrace compassion and strength in their interactions with migrants.

The bishops also prayed for governments and their leaders who shape immigration policy. They additionally prayed for those who manage and enforce border laws. The bishops urged all involved to seek humane and dignified solutions for migration. Their visit underscored the importance of faith, compassion, and dialogue in addressing border challenges. The day’s events concluded with a shared commitment to supporting migrants and their advocates.
