Severe storms to batter Spain with flooding risks this week

Stormy weather is set to hit parts of Spain starting on Monday 15. Heavy downpours, hail and strong winds are expected in several regions. The storms will develop mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. On Monday, the Central System, Cantabrian Mountains, Iberian System, and parts of Galicia and Extremadura will see the worst conditions. Thunderstorms will become more organised across central and western Spain, with rainfall short but intense. This raises the risk of localised flooding in low-lying areas and river valleys.

By Tuesday, storms will continue across large parts of central and northern Spain. The most affected areas will include the mountainous interior, such as the Central System and its surrounding provinces, as well as parts of northern Spain influenced by Atlantic humidity. The storms will remain unevenly distributed, with some places experiencing heavy rain while nearby areas stay dry.

On Wednesday, the atmosphere will begin to stabilise slowly. However, residual instability will still allow for isolated thunderstorms in some locations. Road conditions will be particularly hazardous during peak storm hours. Sudden reductions in visibility and surface water accumulation are likely to disrupt travel. The risk of localised flooding will persist in vulnerable areas.
