Astana's child window falls surge as summer brings deadly risks

Falls from windows remain a serious safety concern for children in Astana. Each year, dozens of incidents are reported, often leading to severe injuries or worse. Young children are particularly at risk during the warmer months. In 2023, 31 children fell from windows in the city, with one fatality. The following year saw a sharp rise, with 63 cases and four deaths. The trend worsened in 2025, when 85 children fell, resulting in nine fatalities.

By June 23, 2026, authorities had already recorded 29 falls, with seven fatalities reported through the '112' emergency hotline. Most victims are aged one to five. These accidents typically happen when children are left alone, have access to open windows, or climb on furniture placed near windows.

In response, Astana has introduced preventive steps. These include regular building inspections, public awareness campaigns, and the installation of childproof window locks. Such measures aim to reduce the risk during spring and summer, when incidents peak. Falls from windows can cause traumatic brain injuries, fractures, and damage to internal organs. The city’s ongoing efforts focus on stopping these preventable accidents. Officials continue to urge parents and carers to remain vigilant.
