Shina Foundation’s Okoa Mama na Mtoto Initiative is improving maternal and child health in Kilifi County. The programme trains local residents to become trusted sources of information within their communities. It targets everyday influencers like boda boda and tuk-tuk riders, women leaders, and organised groups. Many families in Kilifi struggle to access timely maternal healthcare. Long distances and limited awareness create barriers to proper care. The initiative addresses these issues by empowering community champions to educate their neighbours.
Norah Mulatya, a boda boda rider in Malindi, is one such champion. She uses local songs and casual conversations to teach mothers about nutrition and safe pregnancy. Tuk-tuk operators also receive training to provide health education and referrals while transporting passengers.
Nazi Kivutha leads Shina Foundation, which invests in grassroots training for these advocates. The champions help families recognise pregnancy danger signs, understand nutrition, and navigate healthcare services. The initiative’s impact is visible in the growing number of local people taking charge of maternal and child health. More residents now act as reliable sources of information in their communities. This grassroots approach is making healthcare knowledge more accessible in Kilifi County.
