China's Taipingling nuclear reactor achieves first critical milestone

Unit 2 at China’s Taipingling nuclear power plant has achieved its first sustained nuclear chain reaction. The milestone marks a key step towards the reactor’s full operation in Guangdong province. China’s National Nuclear Safety Administration granted Taipingling 2 a 40-year operating licence on 30 April. The first nuclear fuel loading followed shortly after, completing on 3 May.

The reactor reached its first criticality control point at 09:45 local time on 24 June. Full criticality was confirmed at 00:22 the next day, according to operator China General Nuclear (CGN).

Taipingling 2 is the second of six planned Hualong One (HPR1000) reactors at the site. The entire project represents a total investment of over CNY120 billion (USD17 billion). Once operational, all six units will generate more than 55 billion kilowatt-hours annually. The plant is expected to cut standard coal use by about 16.65 million tonnes yearly. It will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by roughly 50.82 million tonnes each year. CGN noted that first criticality provides a strong basis for grid connection and future commissioning.
