King County faces deadly surge with 37 drug-related deaths in weeks

King County has recorded a sharp rise in drug-related deaths in recent weeks. Since 26 May, the Medical Examiner’s Office has reported 37 fatalities linked to substance intoxication. The first recorded death in this period was Wanda Elaine Hembd, a 61-year-old woman. She died on 10 April from acute combined intoxication involving morphine, mitragynine, cyclobenzaprine, and bupropion. Emmanuel Ramirez, a 42-year-old man, passed away on 21 April after consuming a mix of mitragynine compounds, butalbital, oxycodone, fluoxetine, and lorazepam.

Nicholas Yorde, aged 29, died on 28 April due to combined alcohol and drug intoxication, including meprobamate and carisoprodol. The deaths continued into June, with David Lynn Winter, 62, and Michael Duane Stegemann, 53, both succumbing on 4 and 5 June respectively to fentanyl and methamphetamine intoxication. Robert Joseph Lumpkin, 47, died the following day from a combination of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine.

On 7 June, two more fatalities occurred. Daniel Vincent Smith, 37, died from fentanyl and methamphetamine, while Ralph Alexander Young, 64, passed away from fentanyl intoxication. The latest recorded death was Kneejamaya Goldsmith, a 22-year-old woman, on 8 June, also due to fentanyl. The total now stands at 37 drug-related deaths in under a month. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of each case. The Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released further details on the remaining fatalities.
