Kazakhstan Proposes UN Water Body to Combat Global Climate Crisis

Dr. Michal Kravčík, a Goldman Environmental Prize winner, has praised Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s proposal for a UN-based international water organisation. He described the move as a timely and necessary response to global climate and water challenges. Kravčík stressed the urgency of centralising efforts to tackle worldwide water issues. Kravčík explained that the New Water Paradigm highlights how rainfall depends on evaporation from land surfaces. The approach focuses on restoring small water cycles in Kazakhstan through systematic efforts. Pilot projects to retain water in soil and preserve precipitation across various basins are part of the plan.

He also supports the creation of a UN-backed water body to improve interstate water relations. According to him, such an organisation would help share knowledge and reform water laws. Kravčík noted that no centralised UN body for water currently exists.

Earlier, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhanov, met with experts to discuss practical steps for water and climate security in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Their recommendations include forming a working group to implement the New Water Paradigm in the country. The proposed international water organisation aims to address global water and climate issues more effectively. Kazakhstan is taking steps to apply the New Water Paradigm through local projects and expert collaboration. These efforts seek to strengthen water security in the region and beyond.
