North Rhine-Westphalia Greens push women's rights and green energy in election bid

The North Rhine-Westphalia Green Party has kicked off its state election campaign with a focus on women’s rights and renewable energy. A recent conference highlighted their commitment to expanding wind and solar power across the region. The party also outlined plans to address key social and legal issues. At the conference, delegates emphasised two long-standing priorities: advancing women’s rights and accelerating the shift to green energy. North Rhine-Westphalia already leads in wind and solar expansion, with additional plans to boost fast-charging stations along highways.

Yazgülcü Zeybek pushed for stronger legal measures to protect women. She called for femicide to be classified as a distinct aggravating factor in murder cases. Zeybek also demanded harsher penalties for deepfakes and stricter action against platforms hosting them. A ban on voyeuristic recordings and a consent-based approach to sexual criminal law were also proposed.

On economic policies, the Greens aim to cut the electricity tax to lower costs for consumers. The party remains optimistic about continuing its coalition with the Christian Democrats after the election. The conference set the stage for the upcoming state election campaign. Proposals include legal reforms, increased renewable energy infrastructure, and financial relief for residents. The Greens plan to maintain their influence in North Rhine-Westphalia’s political landscape.
