Karakabak's Ancient Secrets Rewrite the History of the Great Steppe

The archaeological site of Karakabak in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau Region continues to yield major historical insights. Discovered in 2006, it has become a focal point for understanding ancient trade and cultural exchange across the Great Steppe. Karakabak thrived between the 1st and 6th centuries CE as a vital industrial, artisan, and trading centre. Its strategic location made it a key link in trade routes connecting East and West. Excavations since 2022, led by the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology, have uncovered artefacts like a 6th-century jug, reinforcing its historical importance.

Researchers are now testing a theory that ties Karakabak to Aspabota, a city recorded by the ancient geographer Claudius Ptolemy. The site also reveals evidence of the Azov-Caspian trade corridor, a previously undocumented network. Over 24 academic works based on these findings have already been published. The discoveries at Karakabak hold significant international value. They deepen knowledge of the Great Steppe’s cultural and historical heritage. The site’s role in ancient trade and its potential connection to Aspabota offer new directions for research.
