Experts unite to tackle domestic violence and mental health crisis

The 13th interdisciplinary conference on 'Domestic Violence' recently took place, focusing on the link between domestic abuse and mental health. Organised by the Braunschweig Public Prosecutor General’s Office and the Braunschweig Police Directorate, the event brought together experts from multiple fields. Around 180 professionals attended the conference to discuss practical approaches to supporting victims and addressing domestic violence. Presentations covered topics such as psychosocial support during legal proceedings, the role of Munich’s women’s shelter, and the structure of Lower Saxony’s trauma network. Experts also shared psychiatric and psychological insights into domestic and intrafamilial violence.

Police President Thomas Ring stressed the need for stronger collaboration between different professions and institutions. Public Prosecutor General Detlev Rust called for tailored support measures for victims facing mental health challenges. The conference also explored the impact of psychological trauma on victims and how to address offenders with mental health conditions. The event provided a platform for expert exchange and produced valuable insights to improve support for those affected by domestic violence. Professionals left with a clearer understanding of how to enhance assistance and address the complex needs of victims and offenders.
