San Bernardino County Unites to Open 200-Bed Homeless Shelter in Fontana

San Bernardino County and seven cities are working together to turn a vacant warehouse into a regional homeless shelter. The facility, called the West End Regional Navigation Center, will be based in Fontana. It aims to tackle the growing issue of homelessness in the area. The shelter will offer 200 beds and provide health services for those in need. To stay there, each person must first receive a referral from one of the involved cities. This system allows local authorities to direct homeless residents to the centre.

Safety is a key focus for the project. The building will have 24-hour security and meet higher fire safety standards. The surrounding streets will also remain clear of tents.

Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren has said the centre will give homeless individuals access to all the support they need. The goal is to help them find a path to permanent housing. Diane Rundles, assistant executive officer of San Bernardino County, believes the new shelter will fill a gap in available beds. She expects it to have a significant impact on homelessness in the region.

The county’s latest homeless count recorded nearly 2,500 unhoused people. Fontana hopes to open the facility next year. The West End Regional Navigation Center will provide 200 beds and essential services. It will rely on referrals from local cities to manage access. If successful, the shelter could ease pressure on homelessness across San Bernardino County.
