Nettle Tea's Hidden Risks for Pregnant Women Revealed
Stinging nettle has been used for centuries to ease muscle and joint pain. The plant’s leaves and roots are often brewed into tea, which is rich in vitamins and antioxidants. However, its effects during pregnancy have raised concerns among health experts. Nettle tea is prepared by steeping the leaves in boiling water, typically using two cups of water for every cup of leaves. Studies have shown its anti-inflammatory benefits, and it may help reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis. The drink also contains high levels of vitamins A, C, K, and some B vitamins, along with minerals and antioxidants.
Despite these benefits, research from 2015 suggests nettle may influence menstrual cycles and could increase the risk of miscarriage. It might also stimulate uterine contractions, which could be harmful during pregnancy. Additionally, nettle can interact with other medications, potentially causing dangerous side effects for expectant mothers. Pregnant women are often advised to avoid nettle tea. Safer alternatives include raspberry leaf, ginger, lemon balm, and peppermint teas. These options provide similar comfort without the same risks associated with nettle consumption.
