Primorsky Aquarium Welcomes a Giant Red King Crab and Towering Sturgeon

The Primorsky Aquarium has introduced a new resident: a red king crab capable of surviving at depths over 500 metres. The aquarium is also home to some of the world’s largest freshwater fish, the kaluga sturgeon, which have grown to impressive sizes since their arrival. Fourteen years ago, the aquarium welcomed kaluga sturgeon when they were just three years old and about 70 centimetres long. Today, these fish have reached lengths of three metres. Among the largest freshwater species globally, they now swim in the aquarium’s main building alongside other Far Eastern fauna, including the newly arrived red king crab.

The sturgeon are hand-fed cut fish by divers, who note that the largest specimens recognise them and eagerly approach for food. No leftover feed remains on the tank floor after meals. Kaluga sturgeon mature between 18 and 20 years of age and can live for 60 to 80 years. The red king crab is now part of the aquarium’s main exhibit. Visitors can observe both the crab and the kaluga sturgeon, which continue to grow and thrive under the care of the aquarium staff.
