Smithsonian and Kazakhstan unite to preserve cultural heritage through new initiatives

The Smithsonian Institution has strengthened its cultural ties with Kazakhstan through a series of new initiatives. In May 2025, it launched the Kazakhstan Cultural Heritage Fund, backed by Chevron. The fund aims to support and expand collaboration with local artisans and cultural organisations. The first project under the fund is the Kazakhstan Artisan Initiative. This expands work with the Union of Artisans of Kazakhstan. American artisans also travelled to the country in October 2025 to join the ALA CRAFT International Crafts Festival.

Earlier in March 2025, the Smithsonian’s Folklife Center introduced Heritage in Motion. This professional development programme was created with Music Unbound and received backing from Samruk Kazyna. Halle Butvin, the director of strategic initiatives and external affairs at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, met President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in September 2025. He promised further support for the partnership through Samruk Kazyna.

The Smithsonian has highlighted the efforts of Kazakh cultural groups, artists, and community leaders in keeping traditions alive. Kazakhstan’s intangible heritage, including music, craftsmanship, and food, still plays a key role in daily life. The long-term goal is to feature Kazakhstan at the Smithsonian’s Folklife Festival, provided enough funding is secured. Halle Butvin has noted that cultural traditions must stay meaningful to the community to remain relevant. She believes they will keep evolving alongside changing lifestyles. The initiatives mark a significant step in preserving and showcasing Kazakhstan’s rich cultural heritage.
