Austria battles record heatwave as health risks surge nationwide

Austria is currently facing a prolonged heatwave, with parts of Burgenland under the highest alert level. Health experts have raised concerns about the growing risks posed by extreme temperatures, particularly for vulnerable groups. The situation has prompted discussions on national preparedness. Katharina Reich, Director-General for Public Health, appeared on ZiB2 to outline the National Heat Protection Plan. She highlighted meteorological evidence showing a changing climate, with heatwaves becoming more frequent and intense.

A new Heat Protection Ordinance came into force on 1 January to strengthen the country’s response. Reich confirmed that crisis and disaster management officials are ready for major events during the heatwave, provided proper precautions are in place. She also dismissed arguments from climate sceptics who point to past hot summers, stressing that current patterns differ significantly.

Reich noted a sharp increase in circulatory issues and hospital admissions during heatwaves. She acknowledged that Austria, traditionally cooler than southern Europe, must now adapt to these new conditions. Despite the risks, authorities have defended the decision to allow large-scale events to proceed with safeguards. The focus remains on protecting public health while implementing measures to manage the impact of extreme heat.
