Kazakhstan overhauls healthcare with new laws and institutional upgrades

The head of state has taken significant steps to strengthen the national healthcare system. Recent measures include new laws, institutional renaming, and enhanced protections for medical workers. A ceremonial event in Astana marked the recognition of their contributions. At the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation in Astana, a special ceremony honoured healthcare professionals on Medical Workers’ Day. Health Minister Akmaral Alnazarova addressed the gathering, calling the medical profession valuable, demanding, and vital to society.

New legal reforms have been introduced to support the sector. A law now mandates professional liability insurance for all medical staff. Another strengthens criminal penalties for attacks on healthcare workers. Additionally, a separate law aims to improve practical training for medical personnel.

Educational institutions have also received recognition. Astana Medical University has been granted national status and renamed after Toregeldy Sharmanov. Karaganda Medical University now bears the name of its founder, Pyotr Pospelov.

Modern surveillance systems are being installed in healthcare facilities to enhance safety for both staff and patients. The head of state’s focus on healthcare has led to stricter protections, improved training, and institutional upgrades. These changes aim to elevate the profession and ensure safer, more effective medical services across the country.
