Veterinarians are warning of a rise in dogs falling ill after eating marijuana. The issue has grown as the drug becomes legal in more places. Emergency calls about cannabis exposure in pets have surged, reaching around 6,800 a year. Tommy Egan and Julie Kane’s 6-year-old Cavapoo, Fin, recently became lethargic after a morning walk. They suspected he had ingested marijuana, which was later confirmed by veterinarian Jennifer Graham. Fin showed typical symptoms like a drunken gait and urinary incontinence.

Fin received treatment at Main Line Urgent Vet in Ardmore. He was given fluids, oxygen, and medications as needed. After care, he made a full recovery.

Graham highlighted the risks of dogs eating marijuana, especially during public events like the Fourth of July. She warned that edibles often contain other toxic ingredients, such as chocolate or artificial sweeteners, which can make the poisoning worse. Aspiration is another serious concern when dogs consume the drug. The increasing legalisation of marijuana has led to more cases of dogs getting sick from it. Vets urge pet owners to stay vigilant, especially in places where the drug may be present. Fin’s case shows how quick action can lead to a full recovery.
