Astana wages all-out war on mosquitoes with 24/7 eradication blitz

Astana has launched a large-scale mosquito control campaign across the city. The operations began on June 16 and cover more than 26,000 hectares. Authorities aim to cut mosquito numbers by up to 90%. The campaign runs in six phases, with work carried out for 20 days each month. Teams operate round the clock in two shifts, using mechanical rotary sprayers, specialised vehicles, drones, and a boat to treat areas. Over 150 trained pest control specialists are taking part in the effort.

Spraying takes place daily between 9:00 PM and 4:00 AM. Residents have been advised to avoid treated zones during these hours. They are also urged to keep windows closed while the treatments are underway. The city expects a significant drop in mosquito activity as a result. Officials have made clear that the goal is suppression, not total elimination. The measures will continue as part of Astana’s ongoing pest management strategy.
