Allegheny County declares code red heat advisory for three days

Allegheny County has issued a code red heat advisory for June 29, 30, and July 1. Temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees during this period. Officials have urged residents to take precautions against the extreme heat. Five cooling centres in Pittsburgh will open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. between June 29 and July 2. Locations include the Greenfield Healthy Active Living Center at 745 Greenfield Avenue and the Beechview Healthy Active Living Center at 1555 Broadway Avenue.

Outreach teams will also engage with people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. They will distribute water and cooling supplies to those in need. The Allegheny County Department of Human Services will check on older adults and offer assistance during the advisory.

County pools and spray parks remain open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and never leave children or pets in parked cars. Those outside should watch for signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, or excessive sweating.

Officials encourage everyone to check on neighbours, particularly older adults and those with health conditions. The heat advisory covers three days of high temperatures. Cooling centres, outreach efforts, and open pools aim to support residents. Authorities stress vigilance and community care to prevent heat-related illness.
