Shymkent performs first-ever laparoscopic pancreatic cancer surgery

A groundbreaking laparoscopic pancreatic surgery has taken place for the first time at Shymkent’s Multidisciplinary Oncology Center. The procedure, known as a laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy, marks a significant step in high-tech cancer care for the region. It was performed with the support of leading specialists from Astana. The Whipple procedure targets malignant tumours in the head of the pancreas and nearby organs. Modern laparoscopic technology enabled the operation through small punctures, using high-precision endoscopic equipment. This minimally invasive approach reduces postoperative pain and lowers the risk of complications.

Anuar Abdikarimov, an oncologist from Astana, led a series of demonstration surgeries as part of an educational masterclass. Local doctors participated directly, gaining hands-on experience with the advanced techniques. Talgat Kurmanov, director of the centre, highlighted the institution’s commitment to adopting modern diagnostic and treatment methods.

The benefits of this method include shorter hospital stays and a quicker recovery for patients. It allows many to return to normal life faster than with traditional open surgery. The successful introduction of this surgery in Shymkent expands access to advanced cancer treatment.
