Anne Arundel County's new fire station boosts safety but faces staffing shortages

Anne Arundel County has opened a new 22,000-square-foot fire station to replace the former Herald Harbor Volunteer Fire Department. The facility, operational since March 2023, includes modern equipment and features designed to improve firefighter safety. However, staffing shortages remain a concern for the local fire fighters' union. The new station was built with larger bays, updated gear, and built-in systems to reduce cancer risks for crews. County Fire Chief Trishia Wolford highlighted that these upgrades directly support firefighter health and operational efficiency.

Since opening, the station has seen a 30% increase in emergency call volume. Captain Jenny MacAllair noted that the additional staffing will help more units meet the National Fire Protection Association’s standard of four firefighters per large apparatus. Despite the improvements, the Anne Arundel County Professional Fire Fighters union warns that the department remains about 350 positions below recommended national staffing levels. This shortage forces cross-staffing, which can strain response times during overlapping emergencies. The union has called the county executive’s proposal for 21 new positions in the 2027 budget a 'meaningful start' but stresses that more are needed.

The new station’s features aim to enhance both emergency response and firefighter well-being. With call volumes rising, the county’s planned hiring of 21 additional firefighters addresses part of the staffing gap. However, the union insists further recruitment will be necessary to meet full safety standards.
