Austria's patent filings surge 5% in 2025, outpacing EU and global growth
Austria's patent filings rebounded in 2025 after two years of decline. The country recorded a 5% increase, submitting 2,253 new innovations to the European Patent Office. This growth outpaced both the EU average of 0.7% and the global rise of 2.1%.
Between 2020 and 2024, Austria's patent applications at the European Patent Office climbed steadily from around 1,100 to 1,200—a near 9% rise. Meanwhile, global leaders showed mixed trends: China's filings grew by 6.5%, Japan's by 4%, while the US saw a 15% drop and Germany a slight decline.
In 2025, Austria ranked 16th worldwide and 10th within the EU for European patent applications. On a per capita basis, it placed 8th globally, with 245 filings per million inhabitants. Specialised machinery, particularly components for 3D printers, led the growth in patent activity. Borealis topped Austrian filings with 173 applications, followed by Voestalpine with 85. However, traditional sectors like machinery, electrical devices, and energy expanded more slowly than global trends in AI and computer technologies. Austria also trailed in female inventorship, with women making up just 17% of inventors.
Austria's patent growth highlights its strength in niche industries but reveals challenges in broader innovation. To stay competitive, the country must modernise traditional sectors like automotive manufacturing, where advancements in electric vehicles and batteries are dominated by China. Strong intellectual property sectors typically correlate with lower unemployment and higher wages, underscoring the economic stakes of sustained innovation.
