Bangladesh Medical University Unveils Groundbreaking Clinical Assessment System

Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) launched a first-of-its-kind Structured Clinical Assessment (SCA) question bank on Thursday. The new system contains 5,180 questions designed to evaluate medical students in a single, comprehensive test. No other medical institution worldwide currently uses a similar structured clinical evaluation method.

The SCA bank covers multiple disciplines, including medicine, surgery, paediatrics, dentistry, basic science, and para-clinical science. Each set assesses students' knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviour in one unified test. The inauguration ceremony took place with BMU's registrar, Professor Dr Md Nazrul Islam, serving as moderator.

During the event, BMU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam formally handed over the question-and-answer sets to the controller of examinations, Professor Dr Md Zillur Rahman. Alam highlighted the university's broader efforts to upgrade medical education, such as reforming residency programmes and improving faculty training.

He also expressed hope that BMU's advancements in education, treatment, and research would ultimately benefit patients and healthcare systems globally.

The SCA system stands out as a unique tool in medical education, with no equivalent currently in use elsewhere. Its introduction reflects BMU's ongoing push to strengthen training standards and assessment methods. The university plans to integrate the new system into its regular evaluation processes moving forward.
