Bangladesh urges doctor unity to combat measles and healthcare challenges
Bangladesh's health minister has called for stronger cooperation from doctors to improve the country's medical services. Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain spoke at a recent event attended by senior and junior physicians, including Professor Md Monir Hossain Khan. His remarks came as authorities prepare for a potential rise in measles cases across the nation. During the programme, participants honoured the late Professor AMSM Sharfuzzaman Rubel, a former leader of the medical organisation. The minister then stressed the need for unity among healthcare workers to tackle emerging challenges.
Emergency measures are already in place to address the measles threat. Rajshahi Medical College has set up new NICU and ventilation facilities to support affected patients. The government has also taken steps to secure rabies vaccine supplies, ensuring wider availability.
Husain highlighted the importance of a coordinated effort across the sector. He urged senior doctors to share key messages with colleagues at local levels. Without their active involvement, he warned, delivering proper healthcare would remain difficult.
The minister also pledged to combat corruption within the health ministry. His goal is to restore public trust and elevate the status of doctors through collective action. The health ministry's latest initiatives focus on disease prevention and system-wide reforms. Expanded vaccine access and upgraded medical facilities aim to strengthen the country's response to outbreaks. Success, however, depends on sustained collaboration between policymakers and healthcare professionals.
