Bayer's Kerendia trial success lifts shares amid Roundup legal battles
Bayer has announced positive results from a key clinical trial for its drug Kerendia. The study met its primary goal in treating non-diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD), opening the door for broader use. Meanwhile, the company faces ongoing legal challenges tied to its Roundup weedkiller, with a Supreme Court hearing looming next year.
The news of Kerendia's success has already boosted investor confidence, lifting the company's share price by nearly 5% in recent trading.
The FIND-CKD Phase-III study confirmed that Kerendia (finerenone) effectively treats chronic kidney disease in patients without diabetes. Currently, the drug is approved only for CKD patients with type-2 diabetes and heart failure (LVEF ≥40%). Bayer now plans to submit an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expand its approved uses. If successful, the move would significantly widen the drug's addressable market.
Despite the progress in its pharmaceutical division, Bayer continues to grapple with financial strain from litigation. In the 2025 fiscal year, the company reported a net loss of €3.6 billion and carried net debt of nearly €30 billion, largely due to high legal costs. These challenges stem from ongoing lawsuits related to Roundup, its glyphosate-based herbicide.
Legal developments remain a focal point for investors. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on Roundup warning labels on April 1, 2026, with a ruling expected by mid-June 2026. Additionally, investors are monitoring an executive order aimed at securing glyphosate supply, which could impact Bayer's operations. The company's Annual General Meeting, also scheduled for April 1, 2026, will include a vote on a proposed dividend of €0.11 per share.
The positive clinical results for Kerendia have provided a much-needed boost. Following the announcement, Bayer's shares rose 4.71%, extending a recent upward trend. The stock now trades roughly 23% above its 200-day moving average, reflecting renewed market optimism.
Bayer's pharmaceutical division is pushing ahead with plans to expand Kerendia's approval, potentially increasing its market reach. However, the company's financial health remains under pressure due to litigation costs. The Supreme Court's upcoming decision on Roundup warnings and the outcome of the Annual General Meeting will be critical for its future direction. Investors will be watching closely as these events unfold in 2026.
