Suspected Avian Flu in Düren District - Bird flu outbreak in Merzenich prompts emergency culling of backyard flock

Avian flu has been detected in a small backyard flock in Merzenich, within the Düren district. Two birds from the flock tested positive for the virus after their sudden deaths. Local authorities have now taken action to contain the spread.

The Düren district first suspected avian flu on Saturday following the deaths of two birds. Tests later confirmed the presence of the highly contagious virus. The affected flock consisted of ducks, chickens, and geese, totalling just 15 birds.

To prevent further transmission, all remaining poultry in the flock were culled. No restriction zones were imposed, as the holding contained fewer than 50 birds. Despite this, officials have urged poultry keepers in the area to tighten biosecurity measures.

The outbreak follows multiple cases of avian flu in North Rhine-Westphalia. Recent incidents include an infection at a turkey farm in Meschede, where 22,000 birds were affected, and detections in wild animals such as a fox. Nearby districts, including Rhein-Erft-Kreis, have also reported outbreaks, leading to preventive measures in surrounding areas.

The culling of the flock aims to halt the virus's spread in the region. Poultry owners are being advised to monitor their birds closely and follow strict hygiene protocols. Authorities continue to track cases as avian flu remains a concern across North Rhine-Westphalia.
