Blackcurrant Juice Sharpens Brain Function by Boosting Blood Flow

A recent study has found that blackcurrant juice can boost blood flow to key areas of the brain. Researchers used advanced imaging to track changes in oxygen levels after participants drank the juice. The findings suggest a link between the fruit's natural compounds and improved brain function.

The study, published in Nutritional Neuroscience, involved 20 healthy adults aged 18 to 35. Each participant consumed blackcurrant juice enriched with 500 milligrams of polyphenols, followed by a placebo on separate occasions. Using near-infrared spectroscopy, scientists measured oxygen levels in the blood to assess brain activity.

Within 35 minutes of drinking the juice, oxyhemoglobin levels rose significantly in the left frontal lobe. At the same time, deoxyhemoglobin levels dropped. The total blood volume in the left prefrontal cortex—an area tied to attention and decision-making—also showed a slight increase.

Blackcurrants contain high levels of polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins. These compounds may boost nitric oxide production or influence dopamine and serotonin, both of which help regulate blood flow in the brain. Earlier research supports these effects: studies on blueberries, pomegranates, and cherries have shown similar benefits for memory and circulation in both healthy adults and older individuals with mild cognitive decline.

The results indicate that blackcurrant juice enhances blood oxygenation and vascular function in the brain, both at rest and during mental tasks. This adds to growing evidence that polyphenol-rich foods could support cognitive health. Further research may explore long-term effects and potential benefits for wider age groups.
