Blended beef products win approval for South Carolina school lunches

Joyn Foods has secured approval to supply its blended meat products, including fiber foods like meatballs and burgers, to schools across South Carolina. The company's 50Cut range, which mixes beef with mushrooms and mycelium, aims to offer a healthier and more sustainable alternative to traditional beef. This move could mark a shift in school meal programmes nationwide. The 50Cut range provides complete protein while cutting saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and delivering potassium, iron, calcium, vitamin D, and dietary fiber. This aligns with the priorities of many parents who focus on nutrition for their children's diets and believe blended meat can improve kids' eating habits. In taste tests at Berkeley County schools, students strongly favored the blended meat, with 96% approving the meatballs and 92% liking the burgers. Even younger pupils in grades K-2 gave an 84% positive rating, showing broad appeal across age groups. Beyond nutrition, the products require far fewer resources than conventional beef, with the mycelium growth process taking just eight days compared to a year for cattle farming and four months for soybeans. Additionally, 50Cut uses over 95% less land and 99% less water, drastically reducing its environmental footprint. With the National School Lunch Program serving nearly 30 million meals daily, schools represent a major market for ground beef. Joyn Foods' approval in South Carolina could pave the way for wider adoption, as other school purchasing cooperatives explore similar blended meat options. The SCPA approval allows Joyn Foods to supply its blended meat to schools statewide, positioning it as a viable alternative to traditional beef and encouraging other states to consider similar programmes in the future.
