Cadets Explore Military History Through Rare Traditional Instruments

The Museum of Arts in the capital recently hosted an educational event for cadets from the Sagadat Nurmagambetov Military College. Held just before Defenders of the Fatherland Day, the programme aimed to deepen young service members’ understanding of their country’s military traditions and cultural roots. The cadets explored an exhibition showcasing rare musical instruments tied to military history. Among the items were zhorytty—traditional instruments once used in battles and ceremonies—as well as a reconstructed kernay, an ancient Turkic wind instrument employed for signalling and music.

Experts guided the group through the display, explaining the origins and significance of each piece. They also demonstrated how the instruments sounded, bringing historical military practices to life. The event included live performances on these artefacts, highlighting their role in past campaigns and rituals. Organisers emphasised the link between military heritage and national identity. By engaging with these cultural relics, the cadets gained a clearer sense of the values underpinning their future service.

The programme left a lasting impression on the young participants, reinforcing their respect for history and its lessons. Through hands-on exposure to historical instruments and traditions, the cadets broadened their cultural knowledge ahead of their military careers.
