Can cheese actually lift your mood? Experts weigh in on its surprising benefits

Cheese could play a role in improving mood and emotional health, according to Moscow’s chief dietitian, Antonina Starodubova. She highlighted how moderate consumption may help stabilise emotions and lower the risk of burnout. But experts still advise caution due to its high fat and salt levels. Starodubova explained that cheese contains tryptophan, an amino acid linked to serotonin production. This compound is known to boost mood and reduce stress. The food also provides essential nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins A and B2.

Despite its benefits, cheese should not be eaten daily. A single portion of 20–30 grams is recommended to avoid excess saturated fat, salt, and calories. The dietitian stressed that while cheese can fit into a balanced diet, its energy density and sodium content must be considered. The protein in cheese includes key amino acids such as lysine and methionine. These support overall health, but moderation remains important. Starodubova warned that those with dietary restrictions or health conditions should check with a doctor before adding cheese to their meals.

Cheese offers nutritional advantages, including mood-boosting properties from tryptophan. However, its high fat and salt levels mean it should be eaten in small amounts. Following these guidelines allows people to enjoy its benefits without health risks.
