Cassidy's Unkept Promise: Why Hasn't RFK Jr. Testified on Vaccine Policies?
Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy played a pivotal role in confirming Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary in 2023. Despite his concerns over Kennedy's vaccine skepticism, Cassidy secured the decisive vote. Now, questions remain over Kennedy's unfulfilled promise to testify before the Senate Health Committee, which Cassidy chairs.
In September 2023, Cassidy invited Kennedy to appear before the Senate Health Committee on 18 September that year. The hearing never took place. Kennedy had pledged to testify 'on a quarterly basis, if requested', but no such appearance has occurred.
Cassidy has repeatedly claimed that a date is being 'worked out', yet no timeline has been set. Meanwhile, Democrats have criticized the delay, warning that failing to hold an oversight hearing would be an 'abdication of responsibility'.
In June 2023, Kennedy dismissed all 17 members of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). He replaced them with his own appointees, several of whom share his vaccine skepticism. Cassidy responded by demanding the postponement of the next ACIP meeting, citing a lack of 'robust and balanced representation'.
The senator has also voiced strong opposition to Kennedy's proposed changes to the childhood vaccine schedule and his doubts about Covid vaccines. Kennedy had assured Cassidy that CDC website statements—clarifying that vaccines do not cause autism—would remain unchanged. However, the site was later revised to imply possible links between vaccines and autism.
Since extending the invitation to Kennedy, Cassidy's committee has held 18 hearings, many aligned with Trump-era priorities. None have featured Kennedy as a witness.
Kennedy's confirmation relied on Cassidy's support, despite their disagreements on vaccine policy. The unfulfilled promise of a Senate hearing and the overhaul of ACIP membership continue to draw scrutiny. Cassidy's committee has yet to schedule Kennedy's testimony, leaving oversight questions unresolved.
