Cebu City's historic park gets a modern, pedestrian-friendly redesign in 2026

Cebu City’s central park is set for a major redesign after years of neglect. Mayor Nestor Archival met with business leaders on May 5, 2026, to review plans for improving safety, accessibility, and functionality in the space. The project aims to address long-standing issues while keeping the park’s historical charm intact.

The park currently faces several problems, including cracked jogging paths, deteriorating flooring, and poorly placed electrical transformers. Fragmented walkways and uneven surfaces have also made navigation difficult for visitors. Local architects and business representatives have joined the effort to modernise the area without losing its identity.

The redesign focuses on a pedestrian-first approach. A 12-meter-wide entry and exit corridor will align with the Cebu Provincial Capitol axis, improving flow and sightlines. Wider walkways, clearer entry points, and expanded green spaces are part of the plan, along with shaded corridors and more seating. Existing mature trees will receive protection, while service zones for utilities will be reorganised for easier maintenance. The goal is to avoid excessive structures, keeping the park recognisable but more practical for daily use. The city government will continue consulting stakeholders to refine the design through participatory discussions.

The project seeks to transform the park into a well-organised urban space that remains a community landmark. Upgrades will include safer pathways, better amenities, and improved maintenance access. Further meetings with local groups will shape the final plans before implementation begins.
