Cecil County's only birth center to close, leaving mothers without local care
The only hospital in Cecil County will shut its Family Birth Center at the end of June. Union Hospital in Elkton, operated by ChristianaCare, announced the closure due to staff shortages and a declining birth rate. The decision leaves expectant mothers in the area with no local options for giving birth. First-time mother Kasey Conner had planned to deliver her baby at Union Hospital’s birth center in early July. She had already built relationships with the staff and prepared for the arrival. Now, she faces a 13-mile trip to Christiana Hospital in Delaware, despite her concerns about the change.
The closure stems from an aging population and a lack of healthcare workers. ChristianaCare cited these challenges as the main reasons for ending labour and delivery services. As a result, 31 staff members—including two doctors and 26 nurses—will lose their jobs.
Cecil County Executive Adam Streight has voiced worries about the impact on local families. With no other hospitals in the county, pregnant residents must now travel to Christiana Hospital or Upper Chesapeake Hospital in Harford County, nearly an hour away. A public hearing on June 11th at 5 pm at the Comfort Inn in North East, MD, will allow the community to discuss the closure and explore possible solutions. The shutdown of Union Hospital’s birth center takes effect on June 30th. Expectant mothers like Conner will need to seek care outside Cecil County, while displaced staff face job losses. The upcoming public hearing aims to address concerns and find ways to support affected families.
