Emergency at Premiere - Opera Singer Hospitalized - Chemnitz Opera's Don Giovanni saved by audience hero after singer collapses mid-performance

A performance of Don Giovanni at Chemnitz Opera took an unexpected turn on Friday evening. Singer Johann Kalvelage fell seriously ill during the first act, forcing an impromptu change to the show. The incident led to a swift response from both the audience and the theatre team.

Kalvelage, a bass-baritone in his first season with the Chemnitz ensemble, was rushed to hospital after collapsing on stage. His sudden illness left the production without its Leporello, a key role in Mozart's opera.

The show continued thanks to two quick interventions. Markus Marquardt, a bass-baritone from the audience and a member of Dresden State Opera, stepped forward to sing the part. Meanwhile, staging assistant Antonia Bär took over the role's physical performance. Their combined efforts allowed the premiere to go on without further disruption.

Late on Friday, Chemnitz Municipal Theaters confirmed Kalvelage's discharge from hospital. He is now recovering after the medical scare.

The theatre publicly thanked Marquardt and Bär for their help in saving the performance. Kalvelage, who joined Chemnitz Opera this season, is expected to take time to recuperate. The incident highlighted the quick thinking of both the audience and the production team.
